Cruise Lake Wakatipu on the TSS Earnslaw

The TSS Earnslaw is a vintage steamship that evokes the feel of a bygone era when steamers and paddle wheelers plied Lake Wakatipu in New Zealand and ferried sheep, cattle and passengers to lakeside farms and stations.

Regular Lake Wakatipu sightseeing cruises from Queenstown are available on the Earnslaw.

Queenstown, of course, prides itself on being the "adventure capital of the world," so there's much more to do there.

Canberra Goes Festive

Canberra starts its nine-day Canberra Festival on March 6 which includes festivities on Canberra Day, March 8, a public holiday in the Australian Capital Territory.

The Canberra Festival features community activities, art, performance, film, and music, celebrating Australia's capital city, and its people and culture, in intriguing, new ways.

During the festival, up to 50 hot air balloons will fly over Canberra.

Canberra museums will highlight the capital city's heritage and history in its various displays.

It's Moomba Time

Get set for Melbourne's massive carnival-like festival, Moomba, which takes place over Victoria's Labor Day long weekend (March 5-8).

There's a host of activities on and along the Yarra River and at Docklands, with the colorful Moomba parade — with its long line of "fantasy" floats and costumed participants — occurring on Labor Day Monday, March 8, in the heart of the city.

Australia in March

March is the start of the southern autumn. As the hot summer weather cools into the coming winter, the time for parades and festivities continues in Australia.

There's the Moomba Festival in Melbourne, St Patrick's Day parade in Sydney, Canberra Day in Canberra.

In the cooling weather, go on roadtrips and explore the outdoors. Go to sea and cruise, go bush and explore.

The southern autumn starts on March 1, and ends on May 31. Generally it is a quieter, cooler — and less expensive — time than summer. You can do most of the summer activities but in pleasanter weather.

Kangaroo Island: Beaches, Bush, Wildlife

Australia's third largest island is still largely wilderness area which, at the same time, is close enough to South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, for a day's excursion. It's a haven for lovers of beach, bush and wildlife.

Drive down Fleurieu Peninsula all the way south to Cape Jervis where you can catch the ferry across the narrow Backstairs Passage to Kangaroo Island.

It's a daytrip worth considering when you're in Adelaide.

Sail Away to Rangitoto

From the south shore of Auckland's Waitemata Harbour, the island of Rangitoto is quickly discernible -- and identifiable -- by its symmetrical, elongated shape and its 259-metre volcanic summit.

Rangitoto Island is close enough to Auckland for a leisurely daytrip, just 45 minutes away by ferry, and Auckland visitors and locals alike do just that.
